Idea Behind The Build:

There is nothing better than paramotoring on a sunny warm night with some sweet tunes jamming in your ears. With that in mind, there are hundreds of different helmet options and packages to choose from, that nobody really knows which to go with! Well, we've spent the last handful of years testing, trying, and seeing what helmet, bluetooth system, ear muffs, etc are really the cream of the crop for flying paramotors. Through this pursit of the ultimate helmet setup, we've found what we like, how we like it, and decided to put a package together for others to get it too. We are not doing this to make a bunch of money, in fact, it's probably not worth our time to do, but we're doing it because we know that when you're getting into paramotoring the idea of building out your own helmet can be scary. We've taken that on ourselves, and this helmet setup will come ready for you to put on your head, connect to the SENA, turn on the tunes, and start having a good time.

These builds are all done by hand, by our team here at Backcountry PPG. As a result, these are not an in stock item ready to ship out today (yet). These are all built to order, and although we work hard to be fast, we do ask you be patience in the process as we are already building out a bunch of these for our customers.

Why This Setup:

If you're getting into paramotoring, I would highly recommend this helmet setup for you. This setup is going to have all of the things you need, without any of the things you'll never use. Most pilots, do not need the fancy radio systems like they think they do. Most helmets on the market place either have a cheap bluetooth system, or bad ear muffs that don't seal around your ears well.

When purchasing a helmet setup there are a handful of key things you are looking for. Firstly is safety, and this is a certified helmet. Secondly, you want the helmet to act as a base for installing other things to it. This means you want a comfortable and lightweight helmet, which this is. Third, you want a helmet that does a good job at reducing the noise you experience while you are flying. Between the motor noise and the wind noise, you need good ear muffs that hug tight, seal your ear well, and reduce the DB your ears experience. Fourth is that you want a good bluetooth system for listening to music, answering phone calls, and chatting with your fellow pilot while flying around.

With all of those things in mind, we built this helmet system. The helmet is a lightweight and comfortable helmet. The ear muffs are the most powerful we can find, and we upgrade the ear cups to bigger, better gel ear muffs. The bluetooth system is the top of the line and has the best sound quality possible. The combination of all of these things delivers a excellent flying experience.

The Helmet - Icaro 2000 Solar X 2

The first part of this helmet is what we call, the "shell." The shell we have choosen to go with is the Icaro 2000 Solar X 2 helmet. This is a lightweight, carbon fiber, well padded, comfortable, and sexy helmet made out of europe. This helmet has been our helmet of choice since 2012 and is a very lightweight and comfortable platform to attach the remaining components of the helmet. This helmet comes in 3 different sizes, listed below.

Small (53cm to 54m)
Medium (55cm to 56cm)
Large (57cm to 61cm)

Ear Muffs - 3M PELTOR Ear Muffs

The right ear muffs make a big difference in the noise reduction, strength of the speakers, and the overall comfort in flight. There are a lot of ear muffs out there, and we've found the combination that give you the best ear coverage, inside depth, and overall noise reduction. The 3M Peltor ear muffs, with the upgraded PROHEAR Gel Ear Pads make a huge difference over other ear muffs. These do a handful of things, firstly we get the bigger 3M Peltor ear muffs, so there is more space inside the ear muff allowing for more foam and room for the SENA speaker. Second we replace the stock 3M Peltor ear muffs with Gel pads which help seal around your ear better, are thicker, and are more comfortable for longer flights. The third thing we do is drill out a small hole for the sena speaker cord to pass through so the cord doesn't disrupt the ear muffs seal around your ears, killing the noise reduction. These ear muffs make the overall noise you expereince from the wind and motor significantly less, and they make the SENA speakers work better so the sound quality is higher.

Electronics - SENA 50R

We have choose the SENA 50R for our helmet build for a handful of reasons. Firstly the 50R is the higher end SENA system with stronger, better quality speakers for a better sound. If you're into good tunes like we are, having great speakers is key to good music. Secondly the 50R has the SENA mesh 2.0 system which will allow you to mesh intercom with your fellow pilots or instructor so you can intercom communicate while flying. This system can be far more desirable than the traditional radio system previously used. The 50R also has a very sleek and easy to use hardware system that doesn't get in the way, doesn't get easily snagged, and don't have a spin dial for volume adjustments. The spin dial is too easily moved, causing the volume to easily be turned up or down which is no good.
